GRE Subject Tests
In addition to the GRE general test, your graduate school program may also require you to take a subject test. Subject tests are available in the following categories:
- Biochemistry, cellular, and molecular biology.
- Biology.
- Chemistry.
- Computer science.
- Literature in English.
- Math.
- Physics.
- Psychology.
The subject tests cover material that is typically covered in undergraduate classes and are designed to:
- Assess your level of knowledge in a particular subject.
- Show whether you have the knowledge base you will need for graduate-level work.
- Provide an objective way for admissions officers to compare your level of knowledge with that of other applicants.
- Indicate your strengths and weaknesses in the subject area, which may provide useful information to your advisor.
GRE subject tests are pencil-and-paper multiple choice tests. They are given three times a year, in April, October, and November. Each subject test generally takes about 3½ hours to complete and costs $115 in the United States and US territories.
Study guides and practice exams for the GRE subject tests are available online. You may also be able to buy practice copies of old tests from the test center when you register.
